  Councillors Help Clean Up Queensbridge

One of Queensbridge's biggest eyesores has been cleaned up with the help of the ward's Labour councillors.

Residents complained that the land around the old Careys pub was being used as a dumping ground for litter and broken furniture. Residents were also concerned that a wall had been damaged by council contractors leaving their gardens exposed. (See picture above of the pub before.)

Patrick Vernon, Tom Price and Emma Plouivez took the council's Head of Waste, John Wheatley, down to the site and he had one of his team clear the front garden within 24 hours.

A council team also removed the broken pub benches - that had become a focus for anti-social behaviour - and sent them off to be recycled. The damaged wall has also been repaired and council officers instructed to keep a close eye on the site over the coming months. The council also took steps to track down the negligent owner of this property and force them to deal with the disgraceful state of the gardens and take their responsibilities as land owners more seriously.

A notice under Section 215 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 has now been served on the developer in respect of this derelict property. The notice provides clear instructions requiring him to take all steps necessary to tidy up the gardens and repair the damaged fence within 28 days.Further enforcement action will be taken if by the 25th March 2008 the notice had not been fully complied with.

Queensbridge councillors have now launched a crackdown on irresponsible developers across the ward. Please let us know if you are aware on any similar sites.

Queensbirdge councillor Emma Plouviez said: "It is not acceptable for developers to buy up property and let it fall into such a state of disrepair.

"If developers buy up our building they have a duty to keep the land clean and clear from litter and not let is become such an eyesore.

"Why should residents suffer while developers sit around waiting to trouser a huge profit?"
