Wriggle Out of Waste With a Wormery

Brownswood councillor Feryat Demirci joined other Hackney resident at Compost in the Park day in Clissold Park in May.

The event proved a hugh success with over 500 residents attending and orders for wormeries and compost bins flooding in.

Cllr Demirci said: "It's great to see the residents of Hackney taking such an interest in home composting.

"The council offer subsidised compost bins and wormeries for all Hackney residents.

"There are variety of different types of bins and they can be bought for as little as £10.

"They're a great way of getting kids involved in green issues and pay a huge part in reducing the amount of waste going into incineration.

"Around 30 per cent of rubbish thrown away is food waste and it's really important that we get that figure down.

"Please contct your local councillors in you would like to get hold of a wormery for your garden."

Composting keeps food and waste out of general refuse, and after six months, kitchen and garden scraps will have broken down into perfect food for the garden.

The resulting compost can be either dug into the garden or mulched on the top soil.

Labour has introduced compulsory recycling for all street level properties to help boost recycling.

We have introduced plastic recycling and you will soon be able to recycle milk and orange juice cartons.
