End of the Line for Network Rail

Labour councillors in Hackney Central Ward are celebrating the Council taking action against Network Rail for failing to maintain the many railway bridges in the borough.

Environmental health, waste services and enforcement officers have worked together to serve five notices on the rail company to force them to undertake work to end the nuisance of pigeons and pigeon mess on the pavements. Work to remedy this long standing problem will be finished by the end of April.

Cllr Samantha Lloyd, one of the councillors for Hackney Central welcomed this, saying: "For too long, our constituents have had to try to weave between pigeons sitting under the bridges and hoping to avoid their mess. On top of that, the council spends thousands of pounds cleaning the pavements regularly.

I am delighted that Network Rail have agreed to undertake the work on the five worst bridges immediately, with all the other bridges in the borough following behind. This is another real example of Labour in Hackney making life better and easier for our residents".

Network Rail have until the end of April to complete the works on their bridges on Wilton Way, Amhurst Road, Graham Road, Dalston Lane and Richmond Road. A file on all railway bridges in the borough has been submitted to the company and officers from the council will be seeking agreement from Network Rail as to an acceptable timeframe for them to take all necessary steps on all of their bridges in the borough.
