More about the team
Cllr Alan
Laing
Alan Laing has worked full-time as Hackney Council’s Cabinet Member
for Neighbourhoods since 2006 and has been a Labour Councillor for
Hackney Central Ward since 2002.
Aged 31, Alan lives in the ward on Graham Road and has lived in
Hackney for ten years. He is a member of the Unite trade union.
As a Cabinet Member Alan has ensured cleaner streets, from 25%
failing to meet the standards set for London, to just 3% now.
He has helped lead the Council’s joint work with the police that
has seen crime fall by 35% - the second biggest drop in London,
pushed recycling up to 27%, and expanded it to include plastics and
tetrapaks.
Locally in the ward, Alan is proud of the redesign of Mare Street,
which has removed guard-railing, repaved the street and made the
whole environment more pleasant for shoppers, residents and
visitors.
Alan’s top priorities if re-elected are cleaner streets, safer
neighbourhoods and working to achieve better value for Council
Tax-payers’ money.
Cllr Samantha
Lloyd
Samantha Lloyd has been a Hackney Labour Councillor since 1999,
representing Hackney Central Ward since 2002.
Samantha is 45 and lives locally on Frampton Park Road. She has
lived in Hackney for 26 years and enjoys using the Lido and London
Fields.
She is Hackney’s Cabinet Member for Finance and Chair of Audit
& Finance on Hackney Homes. In both of these roles she has
ensured that sound finances are kept so that the Council and
Hackney Homes have the money they need to fund better services.
Samantha is a Governor at Mossbourne Academy and a regular attendee
at local Tenants and Residents’ Associations. She is Treasurer and
a Founder Member of the Women's Local Government Society, a group
that campaigns for more women to be elected as local
councillors.
Her proudest achievement locally is to help Wilton Estate to
develop a thriving Tenants and Residents Association with a
youth club and other activities (e.g. coffee mornings, summer BBQs)
culminating most recently with an urban orchard planting.
Samantha’s key priorities if re-elected are continuing to improve
local schools, maintaining the Council’s sound finances, and
increasing resident involvement in council decisions.
Cllr Vincent
Stops
Vincent Stops has been a Labour Councillor for Hackney Central Ward
since 2002.
Aged 50, Vincent has lived in Hackney for eight years. He works for
a pan-London organisation representing transport users.
For two years Vincent was the Council’s lead member for environment
during which time Hackney’s planning service achieved record
improvement in performance, recycling services were first delivered
to every household and customer satisfaction in the borough’s bus
services rose from 19th in London to 4th.
For four years Vincent has chaired the borough’s Planning
Committee, encouraging great design and the highest environmental
standards for all the borough’s new buildings.
Vincent’s priority for the ward has been improving the local
environment in Hackney town centre. This has resulted in cleaner
streets, wider footways, better pedestrian crossings, removal of
hundreds of yards of ugly guard-railing from Mare Street and. the
appointment of a town centre manager.
Vincent chaired the former Pembury Estate Committee and now
actively supports the Pembury Tenants and Residents Association
(PETRA). He is a member of the Campaign for better Transport and
has been involved with the local Campaign for Real Ale organising
the East London Beer Festival.
His priorities are reclaiming streets for people and public life,
combating climate change and improving the quality of the built
environment.
