More about the team:
Cllr Tom
Ebbutt
Tom Ebbutt has been chosen by local Labour members to stand to be a
Councillor for De Beauvoir Ward.
Tom is 27 and lives locally. Tom uses the gym at Britannia Leisure
Centre in De Beauvoir as it’s his local gym. In the summers he is
regularly found on London Fields as it’s a great park and he lives
in a flat!
Tom is a School Governor at Stormont House Special School, Hackney
Downs. He is also a trustee for a charity which works with schools
in Kenya to develop their skills and resources. He has previously
acted as a school mentor and worked for an MP, giving him
experience of dealing with casework which will help when responding
to residents' problems as a councillor.
Tom has been Secretary of De Beauvoir Ward Labour Party since 2008
and is the current Chair of the Hackney South & Shoreditch
Constituency Labour Party. He is a member of the Unite trade
union.
Tom’s top priorities if elected are to ensure all people in Hackney
benefit from the increasing wealth within the borough, ensure our
streets are clean and safe and ensure the Council spends our
Council Tax efficiently and effectively.
Cllr Gulay
Icoz
Gulay Icoz has represented De Beauvoir Ward as a Labour Councillor
since 2006. She is the vice-chair of both the Children and
Young People Scrutiny Commission and Shoreditch Neighbourhood
Committee.
Gulay lives locally on the De Beauvoir Estate and has lived in
Hackney for 16 years; she speaks fluent Turkish and intermediate
Kurdish. She is 30 years old.
Gulay is employed as a teaching assistant at the Department of
Politics and International Relations, Royal Holloway College,
University of London.
One of Gulay’s key achievements as a councillor has been to work
with local residents to gain a heavy lorry ban on all residential
streets in De Beauvoir, on Nuttall Street. She also succeeded
in securing provision of a children’s play area on De
Beauvoir Estate, sited behind Portelet Court.
If elected, Gulay will dedicate herself to making sure that
Children and Young People Services and Services for Older People in
Hackney remain properly funded. At local level, Gulay will continue
building the relationship she has with residents in De Beauvoir and
express their needs and interests at the Town Hall.
Cllr Rob
Chapman
Robert Chapman has lived in Hackney for 26 years and been a Labour
Councillor for De Beauvoir Ward since 2006.
He has two children who both attend Hackney schools. He is a member
of the London Cycling Campaign.
Robert is Chair of Hackney’s Governance & Resources Committee
where his role is making sure Council Tax payers’ money is spent
wisely and effectively.
As a Councillor Robert has focused on developing a close working
relationship with the De Beauvoir Neighbourhood Police Team.
Robert's priorities if re-elected are ensuring Hackney continues
to improve as a Council, protecting frontline services from
cutbacks and ensuring we remain London’s greenest Borough. Locally
he is committed to standing up for local people, helping to build a
strong community in De Beauvoir, and working with Council and
police to ensure people feel safe in and around De Beauvoir
