Hackney Leads the Way on 10:10 Campaign

Hackney Council is one of the first local authorities to sign up to the 10:10 campaign to reduce carbon emissions by 10% in 2010. Last week, in the Council Chamber, Cllr Sophie Linden, the Cabinet member with responsibility for sustainability outlined what steps the Council will be taking to meet this challenging pledge.

Hackney Council is working with the carbon trust to put together a carbon management plan and has set aside £250,000 to invest in changes to the way energy is used in council buildings.

Whilst the commitment is for reducing carbon emissions from Hackney Council buildings, meeting the pledge will go further than that and the Council will be working to encourage residents, businesses and partners to also sign up to this pledge

Cllr Louisa Thomson, who raised the question in the council meeting, said: “It’s fantastic news that Hackney is leading the way amongst local authorities by signing up to the 10:10 campaign. It’s particularly important that we get more people involved at a local level so every resident in Hackney plays a part in reducing carbon emissions and making our community more sustainable.”
