Hackney Liberal Democrat Cllr Joseph Stauber today announced his plans to cross the floor of the Council chamber and join the Labour Party. Cllr Stauber, first elected to
Cazenove ward in 2002, is respected across the Council as a diligent, hard-working local activist and advocate.
Cllr Stauber said:
"This has been a difficult decision that I have agonised over for many months, but in my time as a Councillor I have watched Hackney improve as a result of the work of a Labour Council, Labour
London Mayor and Labour Government – and seen the Liberal Democrats become increasingly out of touch and irrelevant.
Because of the tough decisions made by Ken Livingstone and Jules Pipe, Hackney has more police on the streets, more affordable family homes and an improved transport system. Ken Livingstone has
shown he is a friend of Hackney by cutting crime, cutting fares and delivering more family-sized homes.
I do not want to be a member of a party that sits back and criticises from the sidelines. I now believe that I can make the best contribution for
Hackney and the people of Cazenove ward by joining the Labour Party and working within the Labour Group."
Welcoming him into the Labour Group, Hackney’s Labour Mayor Jules Pipe said:
"I am delighted that Cllr Stauber has made the decision to join the party that is delivering real improvements for Hackney residents, he is in a unique position to achieve real change being part of
the Labour Group. Labour is the only party in Hackney that can represent all of our communities, and I am confident that Cllr Stauber has an important role to play."
