Tory Housing Crisis

Under the Tories, London rents are rising by 10% a year and house building is at its lowest level since 1924.

Labour councils will tackle London’s housing crisis by building more affordable homes and tackling rogue landlords and rip-off letting agencies.

Labour, on your side, working to make Hackney a great place to call home…

  • Hackney has delivered the third highest number of affordable homes built anywhere in the country since 2011, with 2,299, (and the second highest number of new additions across all tenures, with 9,195.) We will continue to build the affordable homes residents need.
  • Hackney renters on average pay more than half their income on rent. We are setting a new social lettings agency for the private sector to help protect vulnerable tenants from being exploited by high fees, escalating rents and poor standards, including investigation of an accreditation scheme to tackle rouge landlords.
  • 180 empty private homes brought back into use through council grants and enforcement since 2010.
  • 4900 homes made decent since May 2010, 7000 cavity walls and lofts have been insulated and 1230 disused garages on Hackney Homes estates have been refurbished and brought back into use for residents.
  • Labour will scrap the Bedroom Tax affecting over 4000 people in Hackney and the council will offer practical support and help through Discretionary Housing Payments to help those affected in the short term.

“The Tories remain out of touch and are leaving Londoners out of pocket, I support Labour’s action to tackle London’s housing crisis.”
