Over 30% of households in Hackney are in the private rented sector. We know there is increased pressure on the sector due to the Coalition Government’s changes to housing benefit, and the lack of affordable housing in London. Problems can include badly maintained properties, high letting agency fees, large rent increases and insecure tenancies.
Hackney Labour is committed to tackling these issues – we need to improve the quality of housing in the private rented sector, encourage longer term lets and help to stabilise the rental market. We are:
- launching a not-for-profit lettings agency which will not charge any agency fees and will initially target tenants who don’t qualify for housing benefit but struggle to pay private sector rents
- Looking at options for our own landlord licensing scheme in the borough – which would ensure that properties rented out meet a certain standard
- Using our powers to tackle rogue landlords
If you're living in the private rented sector in Hackney, we need your help. We want to hear your story so that we know more about conditions in the sector, and can do more to make them better.
