I make nearly all of my journeys in London by bike because it’s cheap and healthy, and as councillor for Clissold ward in Hackney I’m pleased to represent the area with the highest rates of cycling in all of London.
We owe it to the many who already cycle to do what we can to make getting to work or to the shops by bike less difficult; less dangerous. But we’ve also got to support the hundreds of thousands who want to make more trips by bike but who are currently put off by conditions on the roads.
If they were able to then the benefits for them and for us all would be huge: increased rates of cycling would help with air quality, childhood obesity, climate change and congestion. It doesn’t cost much to support cycling, and the return is enormous- a cleaner, greener, more liveable city.
