PROPOSING a unanimously backed #CashWelcomeHere motion at a Hackney Council meeting, Cllr Clare Joseph, Victoria Ward Labour councillor, said: “Many local businesses have moved to a cash-free model, particularly since the pandemic, but this excludes people who struggle to pay on plastic cards.
“Cash is a lifeline for so many of our residents. It’s easier to ringfence, borrow, and budget ─ avoiding overdraft fees or bouncing direct debits.
“That’s why my Labour councillor colleagues and I are campaigning for shops in our area to keep accepting cash, and why I’m delighted that the motion passed unanimously.”
She added: “The Council has said we support an inclusive economy and we will ensure that council facilities accept cash, as well as card payments.”
* The #CashWelcomeHere motion was unanimously passed at a Hackney Full Council meeting on 23rd November 2022, and can be found here: https://hackney.moderngov.co.uk/ieListDocuments.aspx?CId=112&MId=5477
