Hackney has a proud history of being a place of sanctuary, welcoming all people – including refugees, migrants and those seeking asylum – into our borough, which many now call home.
It is a place of belonging where children are raised, businesses are grown, and communities thrive.
We know that diversity is our strength and take joy in celebrating communities of different faiths and backgrounds.
As we witness the violence, Islamophobia and racist intimidation taking place across the country, we are clear that this hatred has no place in Hackney.
We stand unified against those who try to divide us and take care of each other in the face of this dangerous and increasing racist rhetoric.
We stand by those whose loved ones have been affected by the violence.
We are committed to working with the police and our communities to ensure that everyone in Hackney is able to live their lives without fear or intimidation.
We encourage anyone who has been a victim of, or witness to a hate crime to report it:
- Call 999 in an emergency – when the offender is still in the area, someone has been injured or there is a risk to life.
- Report it online to the local police.
- Call 101 to make a non-emergency report to the police.
- To report anonymously call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111
