Hackney Labour Party is made up of two CLP’s (Constituency Labour Parties) and 21 Branches for each of the local authority wards in the area. Branch and Constituency Parties meet every month to discuss policy (on the first and fourth Thursdays of the month respectively), get updates from their representatives and to elect officers and delegates. All members of the Labour Party are welcome to their local meetings. The video below is a beginners’ guide to branch meetings from Hackney South.
To find out which branch you’re in put your postcode into the WriteToThem website.
One of the most important functions we have is to select candidates for election. The local candidates for Parliament, and the Council are selected democratically by the membership of the Labour Party. We also send delegates to the Annual Conference to represent our views to the national party and take an active role in debating policy within the Labour Party.
Your membership card has contact details for your CLP Secretary who can provide you with notices of meetings and events.

The party also has forums for members from particular communities to debate issues and encourage greater involvement in elected office.
The Constituency Labour Parties (CLPs): We have two very active Constituency Labour Parties (Hackney North and Hackney South) that meet monthly on the fourth Thursday to discuss local and national issues. Our MPs and Mayor Phil Glanville also attend to give an update on their activities. Recent guest speakers include Obi Saiq a Trade Union organiser in the Picturehouse dispute, and David Clarke from Positive Money.
Your local branch Labour Party: Each ward in Hackney also has a branch Labour Party where local members meet monthly with their councillors and discuss local concerns and organise campaigning in their area. These meet on the first Thursday of every month and are informal and a chance to meet any local Labour councillors.
Policy debates: We also organise regular policy debates on key issues. Most recently, we’ve had debates on housing and education policy, on policing, and on local industrial action. We’ve also been sharing ideas on our local manifesto for Hackney and on how to respond to the Labour Party’s Democracy Review. All Labour Party members are welcome to these and both CLPs feed their ideas into the Labour Party’s policy making process at a national level.
Social events: These are a great opportunity to get to know other members! These events can range from BBQs, pub quizzes, socialist discos, film screenings and meals in local restaurants with guest speakers.
Women’s Forums: These forums bring together women Labour Party members in Hackney North and Hackney South and organise special events to discuss policy issues and training and development for women in the Labour Party.
Black and Ethnic Minority Forums: These forums bring together members from across Hackney’s many diverse communities to promote engagement in the party, hold special events as well as training and development for BAME members who want to run for elected office.
Hackney Young Labour: This is for Labour Party members under the age of 27 and aims to get younger members from both CLPs working together.
